PATTERN - From pattern book. Patterns or decorations are ancient. Before the art of writing was developed, there were patterns that were used to perfect pieces and to underline their meaning. The origins of these patterns lie deep in world cultures, although they are mostly seen as decoration today. The Icelandic pattern book contains patterns sourced from old pattern books/manuscripts from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries preserved in the National Museum of Iceland. These patterns were and are still used in embroidery, weaving and various other sewn decorations.
